Following the delays in the District Six restitution plans, a group of people have in the meantime unlawfully occupied the land where the houses are alleged to be built. It is alleged that there have been at least 75 makeshift structures and 24 tents erected across District Six, since the end of March. However, the City of Cape Town has now obtained an urgent interdict in the High Court against the possible invasion of District 6 restitution land, SABC reports.
According to the city, it fears that the occupation of the land will have an impact on the restitution process. The interdict gives law enforcement agencies the right to remove any person found to be in contravention of the order and to demolish any incomplete and unoccupied structures. Meanwhile, Mayor Dan Plato welcomed the granting of the interdict indicating the City has liaised with all landowners in the area and authorities remain on high alert, IOL reported.
Matlhodi Maseko, DA Western Cape Committee Spokesperson on Human Settlements added, that they are exceptionally concerned that the recent and continued land invasions at District Six erodes the hope of those seeking to return to their historic home.” This is worsened by the inaction of the national government to both addresses the issue of the invasion and by its delay in rolling out the housing projects on-site, ” Maseko said.
