First Thursdays is a highly anticipated event that sees the streets of Cape Town bustling with enthusiastic creatives eager to get a peek at the latest art exhibition.

For the other half of the population, those of us that simply go for the “vibe,” First Thursdays is the perfect time to catch up with friends and explore a few trendy bars (safely, of course). To help you along, here are a few Cape Town bars to visit on First Thursdays.

This popular local watering hole is a must for anyone trudging through the bustling streets of Cape Town on First Thursday. A  lively bar and restaurant named after the local legend of Van Hunks, who got into a smoking contest with the devil and lost, hence the misty “smoke” that’s always around the mountain. There are daily drink specials between 5pm and 7pm, so make sure you hit the streets early.

If you’re looking to indulge in art and opulence, this classic cocktail lounge is a must-try. Despite the decadence that this space seems to ooze, it has a laid-back ambience that’s perfect before heading out and strolling the city. Their cocktails are out of this world and pairs quite nicely with their tapas.

We may not really be able to travel, which makes this lively spot perfect, as you’re magically transported to Spain when visiting La Parada. It’s the perfect setting if you’re searching for something a little different before gallery-hopping, with their delicious selection of tapas pairing well with a tall glass of wine (or any beverage, really).

The Station on Bree:

This funky restaurant and bar brings you a little slice of the London Underground and always offers a lively atmosphere on First Thursdays. Good food, affordable drinks, and live music ensure that you have an unforgettable (and safe) First Thursdays.

They describe themselves as a “speak-easy in a secret courtyard, hidden behind a chocolate shop.” The Gin Bar is always has a bustling atmosphere and is nestled behind Cape Town’s favourite chocolate spot -“Honest Chocolate.” The courtyard is pretty small, so make sure you get there early enough to grab one of their famous glasses of gin. And don’t forget to stop for chocolate before heading out!
