Almost 800 police officers have reportedly been investigated for alleged abuse of state vehicles in the Western Cape alone over the past three financial years.
According to IOL, the officers faced disciplinary charges ranging from drunk driving to hit-and-run incidents.
“In the past financial year, there were 229 transgressions, 261 for the previous financial year and 309 for the 2018/2019 financial year,” the report said, adding that this was revealed last week in a written response to a question from DA MPL Reagan Allen to MEC for Community Safety Albert Fritz on how many police in the province had transgressed the SAPS’ policy on the use of state vehicles.
Last year, a drunk police officer was arrested and charged with drunken and negligent driving after a video of him fighting with a taxi driver went viral.
Television broadcasting channel eNCA reported at the time that Western Cape police commissioner, Yolisa Matakata, condemned the officer’s conduct, saying it tarnished the name of the police force.
