Suspended African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Ace Magashule has been instructed by top party officials to publicly apologise to President Cyril Ramaphosa in the next 48 hours for serving him with a suspension letter, without any authority to do so.
Ramaphosa announced this on Monday during his closing remarks to the party’s three-day special national executive committee (NEC) meeting.
“The NEC has discussed the so-called letter of suspension written by the secretary-general to the president for which the secretary-general had no authority and mandate from any structure of the movement.
“The NEC agreed that such conduct was completely unacceptable and flagrant violation of the rules, norms, and values of the ANC.
“The NEC instructed the officials to advise the secretary-general to apologise publicly to ANC structures and members within a set time frame.

“If he fails to do so, the ANC will institute disciplinary procedures in accordance with the ANC constitution,” Ramaphosa said.
Magashule last week wrote a letter to Ramaphosa in which he informed him of his decision to suspend him in relation to the CR17 sealed bank statements.
“I have also, in accordance with the powers invested in me as the secretary of the ANC, and in full compliance with the relevant conference resolutions, summarily suspended the president of the ANC, comrade Cyril Ramaphosa.
“This is done in terms of Resolution 8.2 of the 54th ANC national conference, which states that ‘every cadre accused of, or reported to be involved in, corrupt practices accounts to the ANC integrity committee immediately, or faces disciplinary processes,” Magashule wrote in the letter.

This was after the ANC suspended the membership of Magashule until finalisation of his court case.
Magashule was currently out on R200 000 bail and charged with corruption, fraud, and money laundering related to a Free State asbestos tender, dating back to his tenure as premier of the province.
In a letter dated May 3, ANC deputy secretary-general Jesse Duarte informed Magashule that he was temporarily suspended.
The letter said that Magashule would be prohibited from making public pronouncements.
