There are dozens of Italian restaurants in Cape Town, but one that has flown under the radar, or so I feel, is La Frasca.

With Cape Town barely noticing, La Frasca made the ‘best pizza in the world outside the US’ list by popular lifestyle mag Thrillist, among the likes of Italian joints from (you guessed it) Italy, Canada, Spain and France to name a few.

Opened in 2013 by couple Fabrizio and Erika, the little Gardens eatery is big on Italian food for the soul, made fresh in La Frasca’s welcoming and intimate environment.

No lights? No problem. La Frasca handles load shedding well and comes equipped to turn any night into a candelit affair on a whim (from Eskom).

Everything is made from scratch and the proof of that really is in the eating. What you’ll find here is an authentic Italian experience with dishes perfected for our taste buds and laden with chilli, garlic and parmesan as they should be. La Frasca’s menu changes often according to what’s currently seasonal and fitting for appetites, with highlights written up on a chalkboard daily.

For lovers of bacon and such, pulled pork on a pizza is something you should definitely try – and at La Frasca you can do just that. Or perhaps you feel like a seafood pappardelle pasta with enough flu-busting chilli to work up a moderate perspiration? When it comes to pasta here, there is no skimping on quality ingredients and I relished the sizable portions packed with fresh items.

It tastes as fresh as it looks.

There is probably no real sure-fire way to tell who does the best Italian in Cape Town, but La Frasca can’t be overlooked when talking top five in the city or even top three. From the real buffalo mozzarella, roma tomatoes and freshly picked basil forming the base of these superb wood-fired pizzas to the hands-on owners, the complete Italian experience is achieved here. Bring friends and indulge!
