It’s nearly winter, which means rain, wind and freezing temperatures. Winter is a harsh season for animals too, and local rescue centres are doing what they can to offer warmth and shelter for dogs who haven’t found their loving owners yet.
But times are tough, and more often than not there is an overflow of dogs and not enough resources to give them the protection they need.
So, Somerset West residents Aneska and Shaun Spies decided to jump right in and began building kennels. They source their own materials and build each beautiful kennel themselves, then donate them to animal shelters in need of lovely doggo houses. But they can’t do it alone. Here’s where you come in, animal lovers of Cape Town!
Individuals or businesses can sponsor a kennel for R350. This will have them made and donated in their name to an animal or organisation in need.
“As Shaun Spies and I still have our full-time jobs, we tackle these kennels in our spare time,” Aneska writes on Facebook. “But you know what makes all the difference, we are absolutely L.O.V.I.N.G this journey that we are on and knowing that at the end of the day, that doggos are able to have a roof over their head”.
“The awesome thing is, anyone can choose which organisation these kennels can go to,” she adds. “You pick the recipient, I make contact with them once the kennel is done, to say that they have been donated a kennel and then it would just need to be collected from us. We, unfortunately, do not have the means to deliver… just yet.”
If you want to get involved but aren’t able to spare that cash at the moment, you can also donate materials. “The biggest expense we have is the wood. We are specifically looking for timber companies who are able to either sponsor us wood or give it to us at a discounted rate.”
