The Western Cape has recorded 18 additional deaths since Friday, May 21, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the province to 11 763.
Premier Alan Winde said in a statement on Monday that the province had 3 460 active COVID-19 infections, with a total of 291 910 people having been infected with COVID-19 to date and 276 687 recoveries.

Total confirmed number of people ever infected with COVID-19: 291 910
Total recoveries: 276 687
Total deaths: 11 763

Hospitalisations: 790, of which 170 are in high care or ICU
By 5pm on 23 May 2021, the Western Cape Government had administered 102 394 vaccines.
Winde said as part of the Western Cape’s scale-up approach, more and more vaccination sites will be “coming online” across the province over the next two weeks.
“Western Cape Government is continuously bringing online vaccination sites, and there will be one near you soon,” the premier said.
He said this was being done as more vaccines arrived in the province, enabling a greater number of vaccinations to take place daily.
“Already we have been able to scale up from just 7 sites to more than 50 in the space of one week. This scale-up will continue in the days and weeks ahead,” he said.

Meanwhile, as of Monday, May 24, South Africa recorded a total of 1 637 848 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
At least 2 383 new cases were recorded in the last 24-hour cycle, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said in a statement on Monday.
