Cape Town sees its fair share of celebrities, either shooting on location or enjoying our city as a holiday destination (Rebel Wilson and Game of Thrones‘ Iain Glen were both spotted out and about in the past few days).
But social media was crawling with sightings of Charlize Theron and Sean Penn this week. Though they’ve been dating only eight months, rumour has it the two are engaged (the giant rock on her left hand being something of an obvious clue) and plan to be married in Cape Town over summer.
The power couple, who are staying at the Mount Nelson, are here to shoot Penn’s directorial debut, The Last Face. Due for release in 2015, the film stars Charlize as a doctor performing humanitarian relief work in Africa against the backdrop of violent political conflict. If Penn’s direction is anywhere near as good as his acting chops, it’ll likely be a success, but we can’t help but raise an eyebrow at the whole ‘Westerners swooping in to save us poor Africans’ paradigm.
On a brighter note, Charlize’s co-star is none other than the supremely dishy Javiar Bardem. Who’s up for staking out the Nellie tonight?

This is not Sean Penn’s directorial debut, his first movie he directed was Indian Runner in 1991.
