While tourist attractions are slowly but surely reopening in the Western Cape, management at the Table Mountain Cableway says the coronavirus pandemic is still a thorn in their backside as it is hurting business.

According to SABC, managing director, Wahida Parker said that COVID-19 has caused “a significant decline in business travellers and holidaymakers”.

Parker, however, said she remains hopeful that once the vaccination process is fully under way bookings will increase.

“I believe that the City of Cape Town, SATSA and Ctn Tourism [have] done a phenomenal job to keep our country [at the] top of mind even during this pandemic so that we are sure that when travels resume, ours will be the destination of choice, ” said Parker.

Meanwhile, the local government said last week that the once crippled tourism sector is now on route to recovery.

The tourism sector which is the key industry of the province’s economy came to a complete halt last year, as the country and the world went into lockdown.

As reported by Business Day, the Western Cape contributes about 15% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), and most of those contributions come from the province’s tourism sector.
