UCT has denied claims that former ethics lecturer Athol Williams was offered hush money from the university’s ombudsman after he raised concerns “about their dealings with state capture companies.”
The former lecturer took to social media on Tuesday, June 1, to share his concerns.

However, UCT has released a statement, denying the alleged claims.
“Mr Williams consistently claims UCT does not want to engage him and made claims that he was ’receiving no help’ and then ’offered money by UCT’. UCT totally rejects these distortions of fact and deny these claims,” a statement released by UCT read.
Williams has also raised concerns over the institution’s support of whistleblowers, after his salary was withheld while preparing to submit his findings to the Zondo Commission on his time with Bain & Company, as per News24.
However, UCT has attempted to squash these allegations, stating that they fully supported the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture and the efforts directed in understanding and remediating state capture and corruption.
According to IOL, the institution has gone on to claim that Williams has been distorting and making false claims, stating that they did their best to accommodate his concerns.
