The body of a 53-year-old man was recovered from Lion’s Head on Monday, June 21, after rescue services were prevented from attempting any rescue mission on account of the fire that broke out Sunday evening, June 20.
The fire was quickly contained by fire crews from Sea Point, Roeland Street and Kloof Nek.
As reported by News 24, Wilderness Search and Rescue received reports that a person had fallen on the Lion’s Head mountain slopes, however, the fire made it impossible for any rescue mission to take place.
The Wilderness Search and Rescue spokesperson, Johan Marais indicated that rescue services could only go up and locate the body once they were given the green light. They then found that the person had suffered fatal injuries. According to Marais, the body was then airlifted from the mountain.
Meanwhile, the section of Table Mountain National Park was closed by park management earlier in the month due to the adjusted Level 3 lockdown regulations. The Western Cape Police Service has also confirmed the death, stating that an inquest docket was opened for investigation.
