Police Minister, General Bheki Cele will be in Gugulethu on Thursday, June 24, to receive a briefing from the Provincial SAPS management of the Western Cape following the mass shooting that took place in the area on Wednesday evening.

According to police spokesperson, Novela Potelwa, eight people have now died following Wednesday’s shooting. Potelwa says five people died on the scene, and three others died in hospital. “One person was also injured during the attack,” Potelwa said.

As reported, the victims were attending a traditional ceremony in the NY 79 area of Gugulethu. Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst said five of the eight men were shot in the head, reports News24. The motive for the murders has not been determined and the identities of the deceased would be released once their families have been informed.

Meanwhile, Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz, calls for a united show of action against the perpetrators of the Gugulethu killings, indicating that he is in contact with the Acting-Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile, and have called on the SAPS to do everything in their power to track down the perpetrators to have them charged and convicted.

“We would like to call on all law-abiding citizens to stand and work with the SAPS as they chase down the perpetrators. We call on all citizens with information that could assist in the investigations to please share this with SAPS. We need to work together and stand united against the perpetrators of violence in our society,” Fritz said.

In the meantime, police have launched a manhunt for the killers, mobilising all resources in search of the gunmen, as per the 72-hour activation plan. Minister Cele and the Acting Provincial Commissioner, will also visit the scene of the brutal attack.
