This next instalment of City Walk Saturdays is a special edition to commemorate Women’s Month in South Africa.

Taking place this Saturday, the monthly city walk will be themed around daughters, mothers, sisters, wives and girlfriends:

Being a Woman in Cape Town Walk powered by VoiceMap

Celebrate the women who have shaped the Mother City on an audio walk guided by Nancy Richards, founder of Woman Zone, an organisation bringing women of all cultures together. The walk will set off from mother-and-daughter-run Charly’s Bakery, making its way to St George’s Cathedral to honour the Black Sash, before stopping off at another female-owned establishment, the Mogalakwena Gallery. Here participants will pick up a bead and carry it to the walk’s endpoint, Krotoa Place, where the Khoi woman known by the names Krotoa and Eva, will be honoured. Finally, a tea and chat will be enjoyed at Baran’s coffee shop.

What women want

The women’s network called Voices have installed a giant gift box in front of Mint Restaurant. Women will be allowed to individually enter the gift box and view an encapsulation of “What Women Want”.

Names of unsung heroines who have walked Cape Town

At Krotoa’s (Eva) chair in front of Woolworths, there will be an opportunity for members of the public to write the names of women in Cape Town who have not received the recognition they deserve.

#100AfricanReads

A live public art installation, #100AfricanReads pulls together elements of reading, writing, dance and public participation. The installation is about opening our eyes to what is around us, and the performing artists will appear and disappear throughout the day, using umbrellas as a visual signifier of their presence. Young, emerging and professional artists represent the diverse groups and people of Africa. This month, the programme is especially curated around women, and encourages young and old to read and engage with African books, and to get the community involved in the ongoing narrative of the city of Cape Town. Performing artists also encourage guests to interact with the installation, which is curated in such a way that it is full of stimulus and embodies what is organically happening in the space.
