The chilly weather has many of us staying indoors instead (even more so during level 4 lockdown), so right now we’re all trying to make indoor living as comfortable as possible. And warmth, fuzzy slippers and hot beverages are the first thing that comes to mind.

But what about making your entire house feel warm and snug? While upgrades to your home can be pricey and time-consuming, we’ve pulled together a few simple tips from Family Handy Man to chase away the cold:

Check your radiators

Make sure your furniture is not blocking your radiators. Furniture blocks most of the heat from getting into the house or room.

Carpets or a rug

If your house is tiled, it’s usually the main reason for your home feeling like a freezer. Carpets or rugs can work wonders when placed over tiles to add some warmth to your home.

Foil

This comes in handy if you have a radiator attached to an external wall. Place a sheet of aluminium foil behind the radiator. The foil prevents the heat from escaping.

Fireplace plug

Up to 20% of the heat provided by a fireplace leaks through a fireplace damper. A fireplace plug can help you seal any loose fireplace damper to retain the heat.

When there’s sunshine, open your curtains

Use the sunny days to your advantage by opening your curtains. Be sure to close them just before sunset to keep all the heat stored inside.

Ovens

If for any reason the oven gets used during winter, whether it be for baking, lunch or dinner, be sure to leave the door open once you’re done.

Shower steam

If you have an en suite in your bedroom or even a stand-alone bathroom, try and leave the door open when you shower. The hot steam helps by travelling through the house.
