Nature meets art at the Art in Clay Exhibition Festival, taking place at the La Motte Wine Estate in Franschhoek from 24 October – 28 November 2015.
The festival is a celebration of the unique beauty of the Cape Floral Kingdom, which comprises of more than 9,000 species of fynbos. A diverse group of local ceramic artists have been invited to create tableware inspired by the flora and fynbos growing on the estate and in the nearby mountains.
Spotlight on the artists
John Bauer
John Bauer is an established ceramicist, who lives and works in Cape Town. Various galleries across the world have exhibited his pieces, and two museums collected his work before he was thirty.
Elsje Burger
Elsje Burger has a background in design as a qualified industrial designer. She creates unique homeware and tableware pieces for her Cape Town-based brand, EB.
Ceramic Matters
Gerhard Swart and Anthony Harris founded Ceramic Matters in 1997. The award-winning pair studied together at the Johannesburg Art College. Their backgrounds in fine art, printmaking, and ceramics form the basis for their design and manufacturing.
Paul de Jongh
Paul de Jongh first studied Fine Art at technikon before completing a three-year diploma in ceramic design at the Witwatersrand Technikon. Paul lives and works in McGregor, a quaint village in the Western Cape.
Diane Harper
Diane graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, with a BA Fine Art in 1990. She has exhibited locally and abroad. Diane lives in the Helderberg, near Cape Town.
Other artists include Amelia Jacobs, Hilda Kruger, Catherine Landman, Ineke Nicolle, Jo Pentz, Lisa Ringwood, Janie Siebert, Sue van Rensburg, David Walters and Sarah Walters.
Tour the flora and fynbos gardens of La Motte and experience the inspiration behind the gorgeous ceramic sets that will be on display at the La Motte Tasting room.
