In case you’ve been living under a rock these last few months, the Cape Town Sevens are happening this weekend at the Cape Town Stadium (or the Green Point Stadium if you’re one of ‘those people’).
Around 55,000 people will descend upon the stadium on Saturday and again on Sunday, for the second event of the annual 10-round HSBC Sevens Series, which kicked off in Dubai last week.
History of the Sevens in South Africa
The South African leg of the series originally took place in Stellenbosch in 1999, before moving to the then Absa Stadium in Durban in 2000 and 2001. George claimed hosting rights from 2002–2010, and proved such a hit that a bigger venue was needed thereafter. This prompted a move to the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port Elizabeth in 2011, and yet another move to the Cape Town Stadium this year.
The BlitzBokke have won the last two Sevens events in South Africa, and will be looking for a hat trick this weekend.
Traditionally the Sevens are a lot sillier than your average rugby event. So if you’ve managed to get tickets (I think a few more have been made available on the Computicket website for both days) expect to see a range of weird and wacky costumes. If your wardrobe is a bit lacking at home, don’t fear, there will be Sevens-related merchandise on offer at the stadium, and I’m sure you can pick up a green makarapa in case of emergency.
Useful Info for the Cape Town Sevens
– Gates open on both days at 9 am
– First match on Saturday at 10:15 am and last match at 19:56 pm
– First match on Sunday at 10:36 am and last match at 19:30 pm with a trophy presentation at 20:00 pm
– MyCiti buses will be running between the Civic Centre and the Cape Town Stadium from 9 am till 9:15 pm on both days
– If you run out of cash there will be four Absa ATMs inside the stadium precinct
– There will be a Kiddies Village open on the North Stand on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am – 5 pm
– You can’t take any food, drink or musical instruments into the stadium (or anything illegal, obviously)

I have a ticket for today that I would like to give away for free but on second thoughts wouldn’t want to do that to a friend. In spite of the great rugby you can expect to spend most of your day in long long queues only to find the food and drink have run out. Poor show by the organizers and City. And the City wants the stadium to make a return!!??
