Following on from yesterday’s news of Fish Hoek’s successful shark exclusion nets programme, CTE.com is happy to announce that the City of Cape Town has been nominated for two Enviropaedia Eco-Logic Awards in 2014.
Enviropaedia is a knowledge and network building project designed to facilitate wide-scale participation in social, environmental, economic and political sustainability, in partnership with the WWF, Endangered Wildlife Trust, SABC3 and South African Department of Water Affairs.
The Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability project is a finalist in the Municipalities Category. It aims to mainstream urban sustainability principles and profile Cape Town’s innovative approach to working with the natural environment. Some projects include the Kraaifontein Waste Management Facility, the Integrated Rapid Transport project and the energy-efficient retrofitting programme.
The city’s Shark Spotters’ exclusion net project is up for an Eco-Innovation award, as mentioned yesterday. The fact that the nets will be deployed and retrieved daily in an effort to minimise their effect on marine life sets the project apart from others in the world.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Environment and Spatial Planning, Councillor Johan van der Merwe, said, ‘Our nomination[s] show this administration’s commitment to the holistic, progressive and long-term approach to sustainability best practice. This administration demonstrates time and again that we are serious about sustainable urban development and, importantly, that partnerships are key to realising our sustainability goals.’
