SUP Cape Town provides all you need to engage in a fresh activity while seeing the city from a different perspective while stand up paddle boarding.

Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) originated in Hawaii as an offshoot of surfing. SUP boarders stand upright on their boards and use a paddle to manoeuvre themselves.

The sport has a broad appeal and has been growing rapidly in the past few years. The growth could be linked to a number of factors such as the assuringly large size of the boards and various conditions required for boarding. The boards vary in length from a more manoeuvrable 2.1m to a substantial 3.6m. The boards often feature padded decks and concave hulls and generally have one or three surfboard-style fins for tracking and steering.

Different modes of SUP boarding include flat water paddling for outdoor recreation, fitness, or sightseeing, racing on lakes, large rivers and canals, surfing on ocean waves, paddling in whitewater river rapids, and the highly popular SUP yoga. You could wear a wetsuit or other swimwear depending on the temperature and water conditions.

SUP Cape Town has clubhouses on the canal next to the V&A Waterfront and at Intaka Island, which is in Century City. They provide SUP boarding introductory lessons. They rent out boards for use on the canals, as well as long term holiday rentals. Every Thursday evening they host a time trial entitled City Slickers, which offers different distances and is open to all regardless of SUP ability.

In summer, from December, they rent out boards on Clifton 4th beach from their station which can be found under a Bedouin tent on the beach. It’s a weather dependent activity, so you can give them a call if you are uncertain about the unpredictable Cape Town weather. To be a part of the action, download the Club Membership Form, fill it in and swing by the clubhouse. A day pass is R30 and a year pass will set you back R350 and there are special rates for families.

SUP Cape Town sources their innovative boards from Mistral and their convenient, high-quality inflatable boards from Red Paddle Co.

Book an adventure with experienced instructors for some rejuvenating SUP yoga on the calm water of the canals or at Clifton or Camps Bay for magnificent mountain views.

Say ‘sup Cape Town and try your paddle at new experiences and activities and see the city from a different angle.

I’m looking for an inflatable board for cruising on lakes and oceans. Does anyone have a recommendation?
