Winter is pretty much here. We are so accustomed to lovely weather in the Cape that three months of long, chilly nights fill me with dread. Alright, I’m being a bit melodramatic, but the only thing that perks me up is the thought of escaping for a few days.

Only two hours from Cape Town, you will find The Baths Resort. Here, you won’t be surprised to be jumping into a cold swimming pool at night in the middle of the cold season. But only because the steamy location in the Olifants River Valley is bubbling with 43º Celsius natural hot springs that will warm you up again.

The Baths Resort is located on a citrus farm near the town of Citrusdal in the Western Cape. Established in 1739, this self-catering retreat with Victorian-style stone buildings upholds an old world charm in a picturesque, rural setting.

The owners maintain a policy of non-commercialisation. Although cell phone reception and an Internet HotSpot were impossible to avoid, you won’t see TVs in the units. The idea is to indulge in outdoor living in a relaxed, yet comfortable atmosphere. Pack those board games and prepare to disconnect from the connected world, and get in touch with those around you.

The new owners of The Baths have upgraded some of the accommodation to a much higher standard. The upgrading project is still underway. Several accommodation options are available including comfortable chalets, flats, and well-maintained caravan and camping sites.

The hot and cold water swimming pools and mineral spring water baths are major attractions, and stay open to guests 24 hours. Other relaxing activities include tennis, trampoline, pool table, small playground for children, hiking trails, mountain biking and bird watching.

Self-catering is the key word here, so pack conscientiously. MacGregors’ Restaurant offers an alternative dining option. An on-site shop sells self-catering necessities in case you forget something.

The Baths is so incredible that regulars return year after year. Book in advance to secure your preferred date and escape the winter to a wonderland of steaming bubbling brooks in scenic surrounds.
