According to multiple reports, Ratanga Junction is set to close its theme park doors and the land will become a commercial, residential and leisure development.

Rantanga

According to Rabie, the theme park will not be closing immediately, the closure is approximately happening in two to four years time and will depend on when the land is required for the redevelopment which in turn will be a function of the state of the economy and market demand for offices and housing. The exact timing is impossible to predict. But once the purchase of Ratanga Junction by Rabie occurred in 2005, the theme park was aware that the park would close for future developments at some point. When the time is right, the land will be redeveloped as a mixed use precinct which will consist of residential, commercial and leisure components.

According to the Daily Voice, the theme parked which opened in December 1998 cost over R350 million rand to build and has currently not been seeing any profit due to low ticket sales and high maintenance costs.

Some of the rides might be sold but Rabie is also exploring the possibility of retaining some of the kiddie rides for a smaller leisure attraction.

But, in the meantime the park is operating as usual and has a special ticket offer when it re-opens 8-17 July. The ticket prices will be the same as in 2006 with R95 for a Full Adventurer ticket and R45 for a Mini Adventurer and Fun Passes.

We need a world class theme park for a world class city like Cape Town. However, we certainly don’t need more commercial/retail space especially at Century City.

We don’t need an amusement park. they are a waste of space especially Ratanga. Just like a ghost town when I took my little brother there. Very depressing energy there.

About time. I’ve never been because I heard tickets are expensive and how could they have even thought to build a theme park in SA. They should have used that money in a better way

They had to cater for local ppl too! Far to expensive and food disgusting and over-priced! Day light robbery! They catered for “tourist” and “the elite” and those ppl only go to places like that “once”! If it was more accessible for locals it could have been far more successful!

Oh no they can’t do that. The problem with Cape Town is everything is in tourist interest n hence the huge price tags to ride on this. While we look for tourist, we must also consider having locals prices to keep it going throughout the year. The little the locals will bring will keep the business going.

THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THEY HAD REASONABLE PRICES MORE ENTERTAINMENT FOR ADULTS. IT COST A FORTUNE JUST TO BE THERE FOR A DAY. IF THEY KEPT IT OPEN DAILY FOR ADULTS AND TOURIST AND THEN WEEKENDS , PUBLIC HOLIDAYS AND SCHOOL HOLIDAYS WITH CHEAPER RIDE PRICES IT WOULDS HAVE STILL SURVIVED. i WAS LUCKY TO BE INVOLVED IN THE BUILDING PROCESS IN THE LATE 90’S WE WORKED TILL 11PM AT NIGHT TO BE ON SCHEDULE FOR THE OPENING DAY. IT’S SAD TO THINK IT WAS EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL WHEN WE WERE FINISHED. SINCE THEY CUT OFF HALF 2 YEARS AGO WE KNEW THEY WERE PLANING THIS DEVELOPMENT 2 YEARS AGO MORE APARTMENTS COMING UP OR ANOTHER HOTEL.
