It’s not everyday I go to a pizza place and order a burger, but then again not every restaurant bakes the bread for their burgers the moment you order. When doing research for our Winter Specials Guide, we came across a new eatery called Pizza Pallet. They are currently running a burger special on Mondays and Tuesday, where all their burgers are R40. Intrigued as to why a pizza place was promoting burgers, I took a squizz at their Facebook Page and saw the most interesting looking burger.
At first it looked like the bread was just two pizza bases on the outside of a burger, but turns out it isn’t. It’s bread that has been prepared beforehand, ready and waiting to be baked in the pizza oven. I decided to try the Obz burger that comes with cheese, bacon and avo (because bacon), but there are other options on the menu.
I can honestly say that I have never eaten a burger where the bread is the best part. Normally, you are given a slightly toasted bread roll that is so big that you can’t bite the burger normally and it’s incapable of holding the burger filling that just falls out when you pick the burger up. It’s so much admin, I end up tossing the top bun away and wasting it.
This bread on the other hand was warm and toasty like an edible hug. It was flat enough so you could pick it up and bite it, and all the filling stays put. It comes with a salad, so you don’t feel bloated after eating it and you can fool yourself into thinking that you’ve eaten something super healthy.
Burgers aside, Pizza Pallet is first and foremost a pizza joint. Owned by Giuseppe La Gattuta who also makes natural lemon liqueur, One Naughty Lemon Limoncello. Hailing from Italy, he ensures that you get real, authentic Italian pizza. Some pizzas do have some SA influence, but for the most part you’ll be getting a slice that could be from a pizzeria in Rome.
You can sit down in their cosy restaurant in vibey Lower Main road in Observatory or grab a slice and go. If you are on the banting wagon or gluten intolerant, you can swap out your base for a gluten free one, made with chickpea and cauliflower, so you can also enjoy one of their pizzas. The next time you are in Obs, look out for this awesome new spot, with real pizza and unique burgers.
