Maybe you’ve always wanted to try your hand at something artsy, but can’t tell oil paint from acrylic? Don’t fret. Paint Nite events are being held at popular locations across the city. They provide a fun and relaxed space where anyone can paint a unique masterpiece – no experience necessary.
With that said, Paint Nite is not an art class. It’s about socialising over good food and drinks, while you ignite the creative spirit.
Part-time artist and entrepreneur Salli van Druten is responsible for bringing the US-originated concept to South Africa. After approaching the Paint Nite owners in the US, Salli was given the go-ahead, and Paint Nite South Africa was born.
I attended a recent Paint Nite event hosted by the Century City Property Owners’ Association in conjunction with the Century City Arts Foundation. Paint Nite took place at Intaka Island Eco-Centre. The foundation is determined to make the area a destination for art. All material is supplied. Guests are only expected to bring along heaps of enthusiasm.
As I took my seat, a blank 16 x 20 inch canvas stared back at me. The artist for the evening, Julie Anderson, presented us with a painting entitled Blue Moon Cherry Blossom. We were required to recreate it in two hours, using acrylic paint.Julie took us through the process step-by-step, while we enjoyed drinks and delicious finger foods.
Pleasurable music played in the background to add inspiration. At the end of the enjoyable evening, I left with a finished artwork. I felt chuffed with the results (I might have uncovered a hidden talent). If you’re eager to paint, their upcoming event will be held at Simon’s, Groot Constantia on Wednesday, 14 September 2016 at 7 pm. Be sure to visit their website and Facebook page for information on all future events. OF NOTE
