The space in which you eat has a big impact on your meal as a whole. Light, colour, décor, even sound all play a role in enhancing or ruining your outing. At Blanko, the new restaurant at Alphen Hotel in Constantia, these elements come together to create a sophisticated, contemporary dining experience.
The most striking thing about Blanko is how far removed it is from your typical Italian restaurant. When I picture an Italian place, I think dark lighting, candles heavy furniture and checkered table cloths. Blanko is all white, full of light and is styled more like a gallery.
Blanko has teamed up with Cape Town’s Goodman Gallery to showcase work from some of South Africa’s greatest contemporary artists. Some of the artists who hang on the walls include Diane Victor, David Goldblatt, William Kentridge, Brett Murray, Michael Savitsky, Robert Hodgins and Walter Oltmann.
The place looks fantastic, but when it comes down to choosing a restaurant, food moves the forefront. We attended the launch party and got to sample some of the dishes that appear on the menu. While Blanko may not look like your typical Italian restaurant, they do serve all your favourite dishes. On the pasta front, we thoroughly enjoyed the Asparagus Risotto and and the spaghetti with olive oil, garlic and chilli. The Balsamic fillet tagliata was the winner of the evening, and all the dishes were simple yet delicious.
This falls in line with the group Head Chef, Amber-May Deetlefs philosophy. She says: ‘I believe the best food is prepared from the heart – it not only has to taste good, it should be something sincere and uncomplicated’.
Blanko falls under The Kove Collection hotel and restaurant group, and is a source of excitement for their founder and MD Paul Kovensky.
