Craving a burger but sick of all the usual fare? These new kids on the block will be giving your old haunt a run for its money very soon.

1 IZZY Burger

Run from a house in Belgravia Road, Lansdowne, IZZY Burger is a secret gem of Cape Town cuisine. Expect a flame-grilled patty, made from 100% ground beef, and topped with cheese, lettuce and tomato on a fresh sesame seed bun – home-made burger perfection! So what’s the difference between IZZY Burger and every other takeaway burger joint? The unique barbeque basting and simple takeaway-only menu: single patties for those with small appetites or the double-burger option for tummy rumblers. Each burger comes with a side of freshly fried chips, and you can add avocado or a Woza cold drink at just R10. Call as early as possible as only phone orders are accepted.

2 The Butcher’s Wife

The Butcher’s Wife is a small eatery that comes as a breath of fresh air to the busy Cape Flats locale it’s set in. With a rustic interior and chalkboard menus that offer everything from burgers to pizzas, you may be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped inside a Woodstock hipster joint. If you’ve only got room for one, the classic beef burger is where it’s at. For just R59, sink your teeth into a meaty patty in either barbeque or roasted chilli basting, on a perfectly shaped bun with gherkins, lettuce and tomato, and a side of fries. For R15 more, you can add sliced cheese, avocado, caramelised onion, pineapple or onion rings.

3 The Grill Shack

The newest addition to the Food Lovers Market chain, the Hertzog Boulevard branch has a sneaky escalator off to the side that leads to its halaal section. And right at the end? The Grill Shack burger bar, where the burgers are grilled and all cost less than R50 – including a good side of chips. Whether you opt for the prego steak burger – thick sirloin basted with their in-house prego sauce – or a grilled chicken or beef fillet, you’re sure to satisfy your hunger here. Want even more? For just a little extra dosh, you can make your own burger with a selection of lip-smacking toppings.
