It seems appropriate that the name of the Waterfront’s newest eatery translates into ‘sea and sun’. Located at the Pierhead, MAReSOL offers magnificent views of the harbour on one side, and of Table Mountain on the other.

Indoors, however, your sense of taste will be far more captivated than your sense of sight. MAReSOL’s simple yet cosy décor allows for greater concentration on its vibrant mix of traditional Portuguese and Mozambican food.

The restaurant’s menu is inspired by recipes handed down to Chef Eva Dejesus by her grandmother. I was lucky enough to attend a sneak preview of MAReSOL, where samples of certain dishes were served throughout the night.

The meat selection included prego rolls, peri peri chicken, and beef and chicken trinchado. You can also look forward to three varieties of espetada, the Portuguese equivalent of a sosatie. They are beef, chicken, and a combo of bacon-wrapped ‘catch of the day’ and King prawns. This last item brings me to the seafood, definitely the restaurant’s main attraction.

Firstly, there are two dishes which include the Portuguese favourite bacalhau (cod). You can try bacalhau rissoles to start with, or the bacalhau à brás, a combination of cod and creamy, thinly cut potato chips. There are also two calamari starters and mains, a variety of platters, and cataplana, which combines prawn, mussels, calamari, and the catch of the day.

Four gorgeous desserts ended of the evening. They were a delectable rice pudding, and chocolate, Portuguese pastry, and almond tarts. Cheesecake and a crème brûlée are also on offer.

In addition to all of this, there is a breakfast menu. You can therefore dine at MAReSOL when the sun rises or when it sets. Either way you’ll be greatly satisfied by the tastes of a different culture, accompanied by the sights of our familiar Mother City.
