Cape dam levels keep getting lower and there doesn’t seem to be any rain in sight. Needless to say, local government is taking drastic measures, including calling out the 100 places across the city who are using the most water. Additionally, the city has announced plans further plans to help both the current situation and future incidents of a decrease in water levels.
According to News24, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe has stated that water restrictions will remain in place until the dams are at 85% capacity. The most current results show the dams have 23% usable water left. This means that even if the Cape experiences rainfall, we’ll still have to use our water sparingly. ‘Attempts need to be instituted to provide greater comfort in the form of additional alternate water supply sources that must be on standby should inadequate water be received for this season,’ he says.
The Department of Water and Sanitation has also added 10% of water restrictions to the agricultural sector. To keep you updated, we now have level 3B restrictions. This includes clauses like no washing of vehicles or boats with municipal drinking water, no automatic top-up systems for pools and no watering lawns, fields or open spaces between the hours of 9 am and 6 pm.
