Tired of sitting in traffic every day? You’re not alone! Developers Chris Megan and Carl Cronje, with the backing of Accelerate Cape Town (Act), have just launched an exploratory carpooling app that may help ease the congestion on our streets. Named uGoMyWay, the app aims to connect drivers and passengers to each other, and remove excess cars from the road.
According to the Tom Tom Traffic Index, Cape Town has the most jam-packed roads in South Africa. The Index also showed that travelling time during the morning peak hour has increased by 71%! Not only does this have a negative impact on business operations and the city’s economic growth but it also results in more carbon emissions and frustrated drivers.
The uGoMyWay app allows users to compile their own routes, which are then viewable to other users. Matching routes can be ordered by a user via the chat service on the app before they provide their personal information to another user. After this initial process, the app allows the communicating users to identify each other and the costs involved for the trip. What’s more, users can protect themselves by opting to only be included in a ring-fenced community that consists of certain schools, workplaces or areas.
Thus far, the programme has been triumphant with more than 90% of users discovering routes that correspond with theirs. The uGoMyWay app is available for free download on iOS and Android handsets. For more info, visit ugomyway.co.za.
