There’s no hospitality like proper Afrikaans or boere hospitality. A warm welcome, interesting nicknacks and plenty of food ares the foundation of boere hospitality and you’ll find all this at the Rojaal Teekamer in Elgin. Translating to ‘royal tearoom’, Rojaal Teekamer offers so much more than just tea in an opulent setting.

Located on the scenic Viljoenshoop Road in the midst of apple and pear farms, the eatery is in a huge converted shed fashioned from corrugated metal. Not very royal, we know, but once inside, you’re greeted with fresh flowers, a selection of yummy cakes and interesting artwork. There’s a traditional restaurant set-up as well as a quaint little area filled with a mix of armchairs of you prefer to relax in a homely living room setting while partaking in a meal.

Chef Orscilla Hitchcock of Kokkedoor fame has helped Rojaal Teekamer transform into a top-notch eatery that’s known for their incredible roosterkoek (bread made on the BBQ), made fresh daily and served with any breakfast. You can also enjoy the roosterkoek as the bun of a delicious lamb burger with brandy and mushroom pepper sauce or alongside butter, cheese and jam. While there are plenty of standard dishes on the menu, they differ from time to time according to what’s in season as the majority of their ingredients are sourced from the valley. They also try to be as conscious as possible by ensuring nothing goes to waste in the kitchen.

An interesting addition to the menu items, though, are the flowers. Oh, and what flowers they are! Adding wonderful colour to the dishes, the flowers are also edible and accompany everything from breakfast to sweet treats that include cakes, tarts, brownies, apple crumble and chocolate fondant. Sip on a cuppa with a yummy slice of cake whilst enjoying an incredible view. And if you have kids, you can rest assured they’ll be well taken care of as there is alos a play area for them to enjoy.

From fresh flowers to delicate plate setting, Rojaal Teekamer goes the extra mile to make you feel special. Coupled with amazing food, it’s a must when you’re in Elgin.
