Centuries ago, The Vineyard Hotel was a country cottage built by legendary Georgian Lady Anne Barnard. After making her home both beautiful and comfortable, Lady Anne and her husband Andrew, secretary to the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope, decided to leave The Vineyard on 5 May 1798 for a month-long journey through the Winelands. Today, The Vineyard Hotel honours that journey with their Tastes of 2017 Wine-paired Dinners.
Starting 8 April, you’ll get to experience an incredible fusion of flavours paired with exquisite wine selected from the route Lady Anne and her husband travelled. From the perilous kloof that is now Sir Lowry’s Pass via the Bot River to Hermanus and Stanford then on to the Genadendal Mission near Greyton and up the Breede River Valley, the Bernards went as far north as Porterville and Langebaan before returning to Cape Town.
As a result, you can expect wines from estates like Paul Cluver, Waterkloof Wine Estate, Simonsig, Warwick and Meerlust Wine Estate. The Taste of Dinner series is a hugely popular event at The Vineyard Hotel and takes place twice a month until October, so there’s plenty opportunity for you to join.
Each dinner focuses on a particular wine estate, wine district or group of wine growers. Head Chef Carl van Rooyen will craft dishes that perfectly complement the wine using fresh ingredients available in the Cape. Check out their diary and select your favourite wines or surprise yourself by trying something new. Either way, booking in advance is highly recommended as you won’t want to miss this tasteful experience.
