You will very rarely find somebody who doesn’t love Mexican food. From traditional tacos to group-friendly nachos to sweet churros, there is a little something for everybody. Cape Town is home to several exquisite Mexican eateries, we’ve rounded up five for you to taste test.
Zapata
Nestled in the quaint suburb of Harfield Village, Zapata is the real deal. Their home-made guacamole is terrific and I recommend being adventurous when ordering. If it gets too spicy, simply wash it down with a frozen margarita. Or two, nobody is judging here.
Pancho’s
Pancho’s has been around forever. An upbeat party-like atmosphere is the order of the day here – this isn’t the place for a quiet meal but rather one where you can eat, drink and be merry over gigantic servings of nachos and other Mexican classics. Although not quite authentically Mexican, their chilli poppers are worthy of ordering.
El Burro
The trendiest Mexican spot in Cape Town, El Burro even has its own food truck. It’s an authentic Mexican affair in Green Point that always delivers the goods. If you want an idea about how well run they are, just take a look at their Twitter feed.
Fat Cactus
One can measure how good a Mexican joint is based on how good their margaritas are. Fat Cactus is right up there with their infamous frozen margarita jugs. Each location (Fat Cactus has a few) offers plus-sized portions and they even have some wicked Mexican takes on hamburgers. And if you’re really feeling up to it, try the Iceberg and thank me later. Just don’t drive afterwards.
San Julian
San Julian is a bona-fide Mexican restaurant opened by Mexican nationals now residing in Cape Town. Knowing this, the rest is actually irrelevant. The food, ambience and service make for a Mexican experience that is authentic as it gets.
