I’ve been on a hunt to find seriously good pastrami in Cape Town. After hours of trawling through the #foodporn hashtag on Instagram, authentic deli-style pastrami is something I feel that I haven’t had enough of.
Then Kleinsky’s Deli in Sea Point opened a little over a month ago. Since opening its doors, there have been rumblings about how good their pastrami is. So I did the right thing and went to check it out.
The establishment is very reminiscent of a New York-style deli, offering bagels, shmears, latke Benedict for breakfast and other interesting menu items. Owners (who are also brothers) Adam and Joel prepare everything fresh daily, and one can taste it in their food. Amazing artwork from a local designer adorns the walls; sketches depicting scenes from in and around the city, particularly the Atlantic Seaboard area.
I found the best pastrami here. Having gone with pastrami on a bagel, I struck gold. Generous amounts of pastrami are layered along with a good amount of mustard. That, with a side of triple cooked fries, was the winner. Recommended for anybody who is as serious about good pastrami as I am. Along with the bagel we also ordered the Latke Benedict Breakfast, a fresh and super tasty take on eggs Benedict.
Kleinsky’s Deli may very well be the most exciting thing to hit Cape Town’s deli scene in a good while. And if the crowds there on any given day are anything to go by, Kleinsky’s is here to stay.
