Today is World Diabetes day  and in commemoration of the day, the City of Cape Town has launched an awareness programme to educate people on how to reduce chronic diseases.  Statistics in 2015 showed that Diabetes, also known as the silent killer, was responsible for one in 20 deaths in South Africa. According to the City, over the coming months they will implement an informative public awareness campaign to show residents how they can help to reduce their risk of obesity and preventable disease. This includes diabetes, by avoiding a proven risk factor which is sugary drinks. Adopting a strong leadership position on the issue, the City will also move towards reducing the accessibility of sugary drinks within all City of Cape Town-controlled buildings.
