Combine a breathtaking setting on top of the Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch with the inspired culinary touch of Richard Carstens and a relaxed approach towards family dining, and you have the coveted recipe for eating out this summer.
Patrons of the Tokara Deli will be familiar with the artfully designed play area for children and the ever-changing collection of sculptures and local artwork. But step inside the light and airy 60-seater restaurant and you’ll be greeted by the aroma of freshly baked artisanal breads from the new bakery and delicious, thin-crust pizzas making their way out of the wood-fired pizza oven. These aren’t the only additions to the Tokara Deli offering since the new management team and Carstens, consulting chef alongside head chef Christine Claasen, have come on board. The revamped lunch menu includes the likes of gourmet burgers, crispy Tempura-style hake and chips and a selection of mouth-watering salads freshly picked from the estate’s veggie garden. Pair with a glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc (or any of the famed Tokara wines) or choose from the selection of craft beers and ciders. Kids still playing happily in the garden? Check.
After a long, lazy lunch, who really wants to cook dinner… Instead, stock up on locally produced cheeses and charcuterie from the deli counter and Tokara’s signature extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil and olive products. Not to mention those heavenly breads. Eat your heart out, Dr Noakes.
DON’T MISS: Tokara Deli’s burger, pizza and craft beer evenings kick off on Fridays and Saturdays from 16 January 2015.
