Liquor confiscations on Cape Town’s beaches have hit a record high, according to the City of Cape Town. Over 900 bottles of alcohol were confiscated over the Christmas long weekend.

City councillor JP Smith said beach-goers are trying new methods of sneaking their bottles onto the sand.

“The consumption of liquor on our beaches requires continued vigilance. With people finding new and innovative ways to try consume their alcohol, more than 900 bottles of alcohol were confiscated on Christmas weekend alone. This includes 492 beers, 293 cider, 62 bottles of spirits and 53 bottles of wine.”

Smith also said that even more confiscated bottles of alcohol are still being brought in.

Last year, the City’s enforcement agencies confiscated just under 12 600 litres of alcohol over the festive season – up from
7 000 litres in 2015.

According to the City’s by-laws, it’s illegal to consume alcohol in public. Public drinkers will have their alcohol confiscated and receive a R500 fine. Once the fine has been paid, they are able to reclaim their alcohol at a cost.
