Orphanage Cocktail Emporium, the two-tiered specialist-shake-house on the corner of Orphan and Bree Street which opened in March 2012 is launching Johann’s Dining Room as part of their 2015 re-launch.

The Dining Room concept see’s the award-winning Orphanage hosting ‘Orphan Chefs’ – described as talented young chefs who have not had their own restaurant before – in the Orphanage Dining Room on Orphan Street. Each Orphan Chef will headline the Dining Room for a minimum 12-month stint.

Orphanage is kicking off with Johaan Breedt, a local, 36-year old Afrikaans chef, who started his career in 2001 as a simple breakfast chef. Realizing his flair and passion, Johann then travelled to the UK to train with Raymond Blanc at le Manoir aux Quat Saisons and The Ritz Hotel in London, before returning to work in a number of five-star Cape Town hotels: The Twelve Apostles, Lanzerac Hotel in Stellenbosch, The Westin and most recently the Taj Cape town as a senior Sous Chef.

Johann Breedt

“As a budding chef my dream has always been to open my own restaurant, but the cost of entry is all-too-often prohibitive and the risks too great, particularly if you came into the industry quite late and support a young family like I do. The chance to become the first Orphan Chef was the one that I leapt at. I am honoured to be a resident chef in the Orphanage Dining Rooms – it means I have the freedom to be creative and experimental, yet have the necessary support around me to learn all the aspects of this complex business.”

Johann’s menu is devised using the best local produce and is influenced by lighter, modern Southern Mediterranean rustic cooking, drawing inspiration from cooking styles honed in famous restaurants like The River Cafe, Moro and Polpo.

All the dishes are designed for sharing and are priced from R40 – R120 per dish. Johann’s Dining Room will be open Monday – Saturday from 5 pm – 11 pm and reservations can be made on +27 [0] 21 424 2004 or by emailing [email protected].
