The City of Cape Town has urged citizens and businesses to abide by their Water-By-Law regulations to assist with lowering the water usage.

In a statement by the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Informal Settlements, Water and Waste Services; and Energy, Xanthea Limberg, the City laid down rules and regulations for citizens and businesses to adhere to in order to comply with the Water-By-Law.

“In view of the ongoing dire drought situation, the City of Cape Town has given notice to all residents and businesses residing in Cape Town of the following rules and regulations, in accordance with the City’s Water By-law,” Limberg said in the statement.

1) Selling municipal water without permission is illegal, including modified water such as: ozone, filtration, carbonation and other methods. If the end product is water, it is forbidden. However; soft drinks such as Ice Teas, sodas and flavoured waters are excluded from this regulation; but the Level 6B restrictions still complies if municipal water is used.

2) If you’re using ground and surface water including boreholes, springs, rivers, well points and streams – residents need to get permission from the National Department of Water and Sanitation (NDWS) in order to do so. Businesses selling ground or surface water needs to display the source and “proof of authorisation from NDWS” on their products.

3) All non-residential toilets need to have the following: water efficient fittings, waterless urinals and hand washing sanitisers whilst shutting off water in most basins.

Limberg concluded, thanking Capetonians who have gone the extra mile to save water. “I would once again like to thank the many residents who have really gone above and beyond the call of duty with their water saving efforts. We know this new normal is not an easy transition for anyone but we ask for your continued sense of urgency and adaptability during this unprecedented water crisis we are currently facing.”
