For far too long I have been untrue to my German heritage by not visiting Raith. Having been a Cape Town favourite since 1972, it was time for a visit.
Raith Gourmet is widely known as a butchery, yet it is also a highly popular spot in the Gardens Centre to get a quick and easy lunch on the go. We visited the bustling deli for a Thursday lunch and have subsequently vowed to make it a regular thing.
The deli section of Raith offers a vast range of traditional German foodstuffs, as well as some items perhaps tailored to local palettes. We went with baguettes heaped with generous amounts of salami and cheese, with hearty sides of sauerkraut and potato salad. They were well priced (sides included) and I can see why Raith is such a popular lunchtime choice.
Apart from the superb deli offering, there are dozens of items from the butchery which can be purchased to take home. Basically if it is German, Raith will have it.
To top it all off, at the front counter is a very friendly, elderly German lady brimming with hospitality. Raith is now definitely one of our favourite lunch spots and we can’t wait to be back for the German experience and that amazing pretzel bread. My great-grandparents would be proud.
