The South Easter can put a serious dampener on holiday plans. Unless you’re a kitesurfer, it is a summer inevitability of Cape Town that the locals love to hate and hate to love.
But when the wind pumps through the city and the table cloth is on Table Mountain, all is not lost. A lot of outdoor activities can still be done – its just a case of being smart about where to go.
Clifton
Bearing in mind the festive season access control on Atlantic Seaboard roads, Clifton’s beaches are relatively sheltered from the wind.
Kirstenbosch Gardens
When the Cape Doctor is busy, you can be rest assured that no house calls will be made at Kirstenbosch Gardens. You could be picnicking in a perfect, windless setting while the rest of the city is blown away.
Kalk Bay
The bohemian town of Kalk Bay is protected from the wind due to it being at the foot of a mountain – the South Easter literally bounces right off it and heads back to sea. A great day trip destination for locals and visitors alike.
V&A Waterfront
Shopping, restaurants, cinemas and views of the city. Usually wind-free!
Newlands Forest
A personal favourite of mine when windy or not – Newlands Forest offers multiple scenic walks and the best part of it all is that the forest is completely sheltered from the wind.
