Mayor Patricia De Lille faces the Democratic Alliance (DA) at disciplinary proceedings probing misconduct charges against her today in Parliament.

De Lille is currently facing the toughest time in her political career as the DA prepares to welcome new leadership. She has been mayor of Cape town since 2011.

For six months the DA has questioned her leadership. In February, she narrowly survived a motion of no-confidence vote in council.

Several witnesses have been called to testify during the four-day-disciplinary.

The hearing will also discuss a damning report by the auditor-general on Cape Town’s finances and De Lille is expected to answer for R47-million in “irregular expenditure”‚ costing the city a clean audit.

The auditor-general’s report was based on the consolidated annual financial statements for 2016/2017‚ signed on September 29‚ 2017‚ by then-city manager Achmat Ebrahim‚ who has since resigned. The statements list three instances of irregular expenditure amounting to a total of just over R47-million.

De Lille said today she is determined to clear her name and fight-back against charges levelled against her by the DA.

In an interview before she entered the hearing, she said this is about her values, reputation and integrity, and that she has worked very hard in this country so she will not allow anyone to take that away from her.
