Technically it is still the silly season, and what a surprise a father from Clifton received when his son took an Uber from Clifton to Muizenburg on New Year’s Eve. The trip clocked up R 2800 – a cool R 80/km. Price surges in the taxi industry are common on New Year’s Eve, there’s a much higher demand for cabs and operators usually capitalize on the situation. This has subsequently been explained by Uber on its blog as “On busy nights with peak demand – like New Year’s Eve – we use surge pricing to get enough cars on the road and help ensure you always have a reliable ride.”

In what has to be the most bone-chilling Cape Town news of 2015 so far, yesterday a body was discovered attached to the mooring of the shark nets used in Fish Hoek’s calm bay. Cables were used to tie the body to the net, making it sound like a terrifying mob hit of some sort. A section of the beach was closed to the public as police retrieved the body and an official inquest has been opened to determine what happened.

Scary. Read more about that here.

On a lighter note, it’s the first weekend of 2015! Have a great one.

Cheers,
Justin

Uber warned clients about surcharges on the day. Still cheaper than being arrested or having accident.

Jenni I so totally agree with you is one soo over the limit that you don’t find out upfront the cost involved if so he should stop whining or wining and daddy o that thought that the fee was outrageous should have fetched sonny boy himself at the end of the day it still cost a helluva lot less than being caught under the influence if you are going to throw caution to the wind arrange before the time how you are going to get home what happened to “drinking responsively”

We were going to take an Uber from Claremont to the city centre : quote R800 – R1000. Instead walked to main road and a random taxi drove past and it stopped and gave us a ride. It cost us R160 in the end. I’m rethinking my use of uber. Time for some competition.

Uber had all the right to charge the amount.
People had to agree with the multiplier before they accepted the terms of their ride.

Plus had plenty of notice of how the service was going to charge for the night!!!

Oke was an idiot accepting multiplier terms!!
