The first time I heard Shadowclub was three, maybe four years ago at Up The Creek, and I remember cursing every Jagerbomb that had come before their performance because I suddenly wanted to remember everything in hi-def technicolour and crystal-clear sound.

These guys are legit. Too legit to quit, which is why not hearing much from them for a while down here in Cape Town was cause for concern. But the Jozi trio are returning to our fair city tomorrow to rip up The Assembly, so hold on to your hipster hats…

Blues rock is enjoying a certain vogue locally, and almost nobody is doing it better than Shadowclub, made up of Isaac Klawansky, Jacques Moolman and Louis Roux. Describing themselves as a back-to-basics band, Shadowclub’s sound hinges on an energetic bassline, solid drumming and Moolman’s unaffected drawl, which makes you want to rock out but also make babies with him right then and there.

Their debut album, Guns and Money, was recorded in just nine days and released mid-2011. It deservedly received much airplay, particularly ‘Good Morning Killer’, a sexy, dangerous track that hit just the right balance between edgy and earworm. Expect a high-pitched scream or two when its deceptively quiet beat-and-bass intro begins tomorrow night.

I’m not even going to attempt to describe ‘Dirt & The Rubble’, the latest single from their second album, Goodbye Wild Child. Just do yourself a favour and give it a listen…

Both Guns and Money and Goodbye Wild Child, are available for download on iTunes, or give the former a listen on Soundcloud.

Supporting Shadowclub are ‘sexy, strap-on rock ‘n’ roll outfit’ Loveglove Pyrotechnics, four-piece Feverstone, Stellies blues rockes Blynd Tyger and the king of swing, the duke of dance, the ayatollah of rock ‘n’ rolla The Robfather.

Be there, kids.
