An extreme weather warning has been issued by the South African Weather services for possible intense cold, high seas and rainfall that could hit the Western Cape this weekend.

The cold front is expected to make landfall in the Western Cape on Saturday afternoon and the City’s Disaster Management Centre (DRM) has been notified of the possible dangerous weather on the way this weekend.

After the recent predictions snowfall is expected along the province and may reach up to 900m along the Franschoek mountains, Stellenbosch mountains, Hottentots Holland, Cederberg and Matroosberg. Along with possible snow on Table mountain between the late hours of Saturday evening and early hours of Sunday morning.

The South African Weather Services have indicated that the front will cause gale force of winds reaching 65-80-kilometres between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas.

Temperatures are estimated to reach very cold levels throughout the Western and Northern Cape. Cape Town will experience a maximum of 14 °C and a minimum of 11°C with Sunday bringing possible heavy rainfall and freezing temperatures of a 7°C minimum and reaching 12°C maximum.

Gale force winds, possible flooding 

Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas will experience high seas with waves reaching 6-9-metres due to the increasing winds. Residents are advised to be cautious along the beach front area.

Winds will spread through to the Breede River Valley and the Western parts of the central Karoo from Saturday late morning to Sunday morning.

Possible localised flooding may occur within the Cape Wineland areas, Cape Metro, the southern parts of the West Coast area and the Overberg on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

DRM will be monitoring infrastructure, roads, informal settlements, mountainous low lying areas.

The Western Cape Government has informed the public to be cautious and weary of the weather conditions.
