Let’s be brutally honest and say that goods at markets in Cape Town are generally overpriced, especially at ‘tourist friendly’ markets where an artisanal item such as a loaf of bread could set you back in the region of R40.
Don’t get me wrong – the growing market scene in Cape Town is wonderful and a lot of good can be drawn out of supporting local rather than corporate chains. Which is why I was delighted to discover a market that ticks all the boxes, and one that I hope will remain well-priced, spacious and with free parking.
Market at the Palms, take a bow.
The market is located in the historic building that now houses The Palms Decor and Lifestyle Centre on Sir Lowry Road. Before the opening of the The Palms in 2000, it was the factory of Baumann’s Biscuits and Duens Bread, which had been operating since opening in the first quarter of last century. The centre now houses a variety of trendy furniture, decor and food stores, with the Market taking place every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm.
And what a treat the market is. Live music and friendly stall-owners set the tone for a bustling, but not too busy, atmosphere. From savouring fresh oyster mushrooms at Darling Gourmet Mushrooms, sampling delicious herbed olives at Stonehill Olives, sipping on a glass of Robin Hood at Arumdale Wines to feasting on a giant romany cream at Toorkombuis, you can be certain that there is a little something for everybody here at this Platteland-style market.

So many good markets, so little time!
