A nine-metre-long whale washed up on the shore of an Yzerfontein beach on Monday morning, and locals have jumped in to help save the whale’s life.

According to Netwerk24, locals rushed to the beach and began pouring water over the whale in an attempt to keep the stranded giant alive. Many, however, have expressed concern that the whale is dying, as it appears that its weight is crushing its organs and it has stopped moving.

Speaking to News24, the International Whaling Commission said that there are two main reasons for whales being stranded. These include natural processes such as aging and disease, or human factors such as environmental degradation.
