The body of a teenager was taken into the charge of Forensic Pathology Services on Monday afternoon after the 16-year-old drowned in a lagoon in the seaside town of Kleinmond. Rescue swimmers from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Overberg Fire and Rescue Services, Western Cape Government Health EMS, Emergency Rescue ambulance services, and the SA Police Services responded.
Initially, the 16-year-old male had been rescued from the Lagoon by a bystander. It appears that teenagers were swimming in the lagoon when the 16-year-old got into difficulty. “His friends threw a Pink Rescue Buoy to [him] but he was not able to hold on and he succumbed to the elements,” the NSRI said.
Paramedics performed Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on the teenager, but he was declared deceased shortly thereafter.
“Thoughts are with the family,” the NSRI said. “The bystander is commended for rescuing the teenager from the water.”
