A total of 16 people perished on Western Cape roads last Friday and over the weekend, and more than 88 motorists were arrested for various road traffic offenses.
A car crashed into a bridge pillar under the Liesbeek Parkway bridge on Friday morning, killing all three of the occupants inside. It is thought that the driver lost control of the car and this led to the fatal accident.
In other incidents, pedestrians were killed after being hit by cars in Mfuleni, Kraaifontein and Observatory.
On the West Coast, a driver lost control of their vehicle as a result of a burst tyre. The car overturned on a sharp bend just outside of Redelinghuys on Saturday afternoon. Two people were flung out of the vehicle and killed.
Traffic officers issued just over 2 000 fines in the past week to motorists. Approximately 71 of the 88 motorists arrested were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol, with 27 arrested at a single roadblock in Wynberg on Friday evening.
Officers also apprehended 13 drivers who had outstanding warrants.
Seven more suspects were arrested on a range of charges including possession of drugs, robbery and attempted murder.
Officers also assisted 48 stranded motorists along the N2 and R300 to prevent them from falling victim to crime.
“As we head into the festive season, Cape Town Traffic reminds road users to steer clear of drinking and driving as well as texting and driving, to obey the speed limits and to wear their seat belts at all times,” City of Cape Town spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout said.
