After a prolonged hiatus, the Spartacus production is back on South African shores. With thanks to the South African National Dance Trust (SANDT), local audiences can enjoy a contemporary spin on the classic tale.

Spartacus tells the story of a courageous gladiator who unwilling to accept his fate as a slave, perseveres to free himself and others from the iron-clad grasp of the Roman Empire. The play is adapted to suit a local context, where the oppression faced by the gladiator is paralleled to triumphant struggles for freedom in Africa.

Directed by South Africa’s leading choreographer Veronica Paeper, the production includes a large cast of the best regional and international dancers who give the storyline a 21st-century relevance. The choreography is a mixed bag of classical ballet contrasted by internationally flavoured contemporary dance.

Accompany Spartacus is the Philharmonic Orchestra, who will play some of Kachaturian’s finest masterworks, and led by the acclaimed British ballet conductor, Paul Hoskins. These classical pieces will be synchronised with the beats of a drum to suit the production’s style.
