News with a slightly eerie twist today, but scientifically sound. Well that’s what they will have us believe. A 100-year-old tree, planted next to the grave of the first curator of Kirstenbosch Gardens, mysteriously fell over on to the grave. No wind, no lightning, no part of the tree was rotting – nada.
The cedar tree in question was given as a gift to Professor Harold Pearson, the original curator, in 1916. It was planted after his passing and nearly 98 years later, it came down of its own accord. Current curator Philip Le Roux says that there is nothing to be alarmed about as the tree naturally developed a fork over time and became unstable – the heavy part being the end that fell on to the grave.
Call it science, call it a paranormal occurrence. Heck, even call it a dodgy gift to begin with – the damage caused has amounted to R5 000.
Today marks the day when we can all safely say that the new year is in full swing. Traffic was back to its usual messy self, that of course being due to the schools going back today.
