Shirt of Fire is a one-woman opera put on as part of the World Psychiatric Association International Congress, which takes place at the CTICC from 18 to 22 November. It is open to the public at 7 pm on Monday 21 November.

The opera is based on the life and art of award-winning 20th century South African poet, Sheila Cussons. It’s pertinence to psychiatry rests within its exploration of the link between the poet’s mental illness and creativity.

Shirt of Fire is written by playwright Pieter Cilliers, composed by Professor Hendrik Hofmeyr (Head of Composition and Theory at the South African College of Music), and performed by soprano Jolene McClelland.

Jolene’s musical accompaniment will be provided by clarinet player Visser Liebenberg, and José Dias, pianist and coach of the Cape Town Opera Company.

The World Psychiatric Association International Congress is organised by Scatterlings Conference and Events.
