Tuesday 21 July – Tuesday 11 August
Commune.1 Gallery, 64 Wale Street, CBD
Throughout history, photography has been said to further the agenda of colonialism rather than acting as an impartial tool to represent an environment – reconstructing scenes according to the viewer’s perception.
The Other Camera attempts to break the spell by photographing ‘the other’ according to the views they have of themselves, rather than how they are perceived by outsiders.
The exhibit sees a group of South African street photographers – Angus Gibson Collection, Ikamva Youth Project, Isolezwe Collective, Lucky Sipho Khoza, William Matlala, Bobson Sukhdeo Mohanlal, Daniel Morolong, and others – who provide an alternate photographic viewpoint by way of documenting the daily lives of people in their own communities.
